When King Ashwapati realized he needed to dispel the dawn that covered his kingdom, he began penance.

King Ashwapati gave permission to Princess Savitri to find her own husband and live a life she wanted on her own terms. Therefore, during her search for a noble and virtuous prince, she met Satyavan, who was living a simple life in exile in the forest. The princess lost her heart to Satyavan and decided to marry him.
However, when Savitri’s intention was clear, the divine sage Narada appeared and revealed that Satyavan would not survive long and would die within one year from the day of their marriage.
Knowing this disheartening news, King Ashwapati was deeply distressed. He made sure to change her daughter’s choice and urged her to reconsider.
But Savitri was determined to marry Satyavan despite his destiny.
She was so in love that she said she had chosen her husband and would not reconsider.

The year went so fast. And only a few days were left for Satyavan to survive.

Savitri never forgot the prophecy of her husband’s end. She wasn’t desperate, knowing the fact; instead, she prepared herself mentally and spiritually so deeply.
As the destined day approached to take Satyavan’s life, Savitri began observing a strict fast and threw herself into offering prayers and performing rituals.
On the last day of Satyavan, Savitri insisted on accompanying her husband into the forest.
Satyavan agreed.
In the jungle, he was cutting wood, and suddenly he felt weak and collapsed into her lap.
Yama, the god of death, appeared and took Satyavan’s soul gently. As he began his journey toward Yamlok, Savitri was determined to follow death and join the afterlife with her husband.
Savitri: A Wife, Determined Not to Accept the Fate of Her Husband’s Life
Savitri followed Yama but was not ready to accept her and her husband’s fate. Yama saw in awe and was surprised by her courage. He gently asked her to return and continue her life, explaining that no mortal could walk the afterlife path.
But Savitri, without answering, remained calm and composed, and she continued walking.
However, she spoke to Yamaraj with respect and wisdom and said she praises righteousness and the duties of dharma wholeheartedly.
Savitri’s words moved Yama, and he was impressed by her devotion.
As a result, he offered Savitri a boon to ask for, except for requesting to leave Satyavan’s life.

Savitri accepted Lord Yama’s offer.
At first, she asked Lord Yamraj to return her father-in-law’s eyesight.
Yamaraj granted the first boon.
At the second boon, Savitri asked for her husband’s lost kingdom to be returned.
Again, Yamaraj granted the boon.
And at the final boon, she asked Yamraj to be blessed with a hundred sons.
Again, Yamaraj granted Savitri’s final boon. And he was prepared to depart with Satyavan’s soul.
Suddenly, Savitri pointed out the truth: how could she bear children without her husband?
Yamaraj, in the second, realized the depth of Savitri’s intelligence and devotion as a wife.
She had not broken any rule of Dharma, but she, with her intelligence, outwitted fate.
Deeply moved, Yamaraj again was amazed by how Savitri was dedicated to her husband and how much she loved him.
As a result, he granted the ultimate boon and returned Satyavan’s life.
Savitri and Satyavan Return to the Kingdom: Victory of Love and Faith
Princess Savitri returned to the forest, as asked by Yamaraj, where Satyavan came back to life again.
After that, together, they went home.
All the boons by the Lord of Death came true.
Savitri’s father-in-law’s eyesight returned.
The King’s kingdom was regained.
Happiness in the kingdom returned.
Savitri not only saved her husband, Satyavan’s, life, but also restored prosperity and joy to her entire family.
