Dhanteras Story: How Did A Girl Outsmart Lord of Death?

Dhanteras 2024 is the most auspicious day for Indians. It invites Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha, and the deities Dhanvantari and Kubera into the home to bestow wealth, happiness, and prosperity. Dhanteras is the herald of the five-long Diwali festival. On Dhantrayodashi, people buy gold, silver, and things associated with wealth and auspiciousness. However, the Dhanteras story, or Dhantrayodashi katha, is beautiful to hear as it fulfills every wish of the devotee. This year, Dhanteras Puja falls on October 29, 2024. 

Dhan means wealth. Teras is a Sanskrit word for Trayodashi, the thirteenth day of the waning moon. However, many don’t know how this festival began or what the Indian or Hindu mythology behind it is. Interesting Dhanteras Story | Dhantrayodashi Kath 

As per Indian mythology, there was a king, Hima. He was a great king, as he always focused on righteous rule on his subjects. Hima was a praiser of justice and love. He used these two wonderful principles for his governance.

King Hima was a generous human. Hima’s son was just like Hima—kind, generous, and a praiser of justice. 

Dhanteras Story of a 16-Year-Old Son of King Hima

One fine day, Hima was consulting with his astrologer to know how his son was going to become in the future. 

The royal astrologer predicted King Hima’s son and seemed worried. When Hima asked what happened, the astrologer said that the son he has is a guest for a limited time. 

King Hima did not understand what the astrologer said to him and what it meant. He asked for clarification in simple words. The astrologer then said calmly that the son he loves the most would face the end of his life soon due to a snake bite when he turned sixteen years old.

Hima, the king turned feverish listening to the astrologer. A sense of resentment and anger was visible in his appearance. 

No parent in the world wants to witness the traumatic death of their children till they are alive. It is the most painful situation for every parent. King Hima was also going through the pain of knowing that his only son was going to die. 

Marriage of King Hima’s Son: A Solution to Save Him

King Hima suddenly became helpless. Despite being king, he could not do anything to save his son. Helplessly, he asked his astrologer for any solution he could have to save his son. 

The astrologer suggested King Hima get his son married to a girl who has a lucky horoscope. This is the only solution the astrologer gave and advised the king to start looking for that girl for marriage.

Hima tried every possible way to find that girl. After many challenges, the king arranged for the girl and got his son married to her. 

According to Hindu mythology, King Hima’s son was living a good time with his wife. But still, the fear of losing his son to the king was a worrisome topic to digest. 

As the boy was about to turn sixteen soon for his untimely death.

A Girl Who Delayed Yamraj for His Final Execution 

Everyone was worried knowing that the king’s son was going to turn sixteen. Hima arranged many things to shun the time, but he failed. 

He had only one hope—his daughter-in-law. Hima requested to save the life of his son, as he wouldn’t be able to see her becoming a widow. 

With the thought of losing her husband, they began to strategize to shun the time of Yamraj.

The Last Day of the Boy and the Arrival of Yamraj

The day has come. A son of Hima, the husband of a newly married girl, was about to die an untimely death.

The astrologer’s prediction was soon going to happen: “King Hima, your son would die of a snake bite.”. 

Everyone in the home was afraid. And why not? If a person knows his death is waiting for him to carry, anyone will fear. 

However, the girl planned to outsmart and delay Yamraj for the final execution.

The girl wanted to try everything that could help her delay the death of her husband. Therefore, she gathered all her jewels and piled them in front of her home.

The girl requested her husband not to sleep throughout the night. 

Lullaby and Musical Song to Stop Yamraj

After that, she sat near the entrance of her home to guard the main door.

Soon, she began to sing beautiful songs and lullabies to entice Yamraj, so he began to listen to her and ultimately got delayed for his duty.

The Arrival of Lord Yama 

As a prediction, Yama visited the home of King Hima’s palace to take the soul out of his son.

He reached the main door in the form of a snake. The serpent crawled to the main entrance door and entered the house.

When the snake was about to enter the room, it was dazzled with the pile of ornaments and jewels. 

It couldn’t see anything.

On the other hand, the girl kept singing and luring the snake throughout the night. The songs were melodic. The snake stayed and began to enjoy the songs. 

Yamraj, in the form of a snake, was busy listening to the song, which delayed him from completing his duty. The snake gave up on taking the life of the boy.

The girl successfully saved her husband’s life.

Conclusion

The Dhanteras story is not known widely, but the Dhanteras Puja is highly respected in India and celebrated on the day of Krishna Paksha Trayodashi in the month of Kartika, a day before the grand Diwali festival. Hindus have been celebrating this festival from ancient times till now. It is believed that worshiping goddesses Lakshmi, Ganesh, Kubera, and Dhanvantari bestows wealth, prosperity, and happiness.
